How to Remove Soy Sauce Stains

Why Soy Sauce Sets So Quickly

Soy sauce gets its dark brown-black colour from melanoidins — complex pigment molecules formed during the brewing and fermentation process through Maillard reactions. These are similar in behaviour to tannins found in tea, coffee, and red wine: they are water-soluble when fresh but oxidise on contact with air and fabric fibres, forming progressively stronger bonds over time. Soy sauce also contains proteins (from the soy beans), salt, and sugars. The protein component is treated by protease enzymes (biological detergent). The melanoidin/tannin component is treated by enzymatic action and, for stubborn cases, by oxygen bleach. The salt content in soy sauce means that it penetrates fabric rapidly through osmosis — the salt attracts water molecules and carries the pigment with it. This is why immediate rinsing is critical: every minute the stain has to oxidise makes it harder to remove.

Fresh Soy Sauce Stain

    Blot — do not rub

    Blot excess soy sauce with a clean cloth or paper towel. Press down firmly rather than rubbing — rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fabric weave.

    Rinse from the back with cold water immediately

    This is the most time-critical step. Rinse immediately from the back of the fabric with cold water — this pushes the soy sauce back out the way it came in. The longer soy sauce remains on the fabric before rinsing, the faster the melanoidins oxidise and bond. Hot water accelerates the oxidisation process — cold water only.

    Apply enzyme (biological) detergent — leave 15–30 minutes

    Apply liquid biological detergent directly to the stain. The protease enzymes in bio detergent break down the protein component of soy sauce. The broad enzymatic action also helps break down the melanoidin pigments. Leave for 15–30 minutes.

    Apply dish soap for the oil component if soy sauce was in a dish

    If the soy sauce came as part of a marinade or sauce that contained cooking oil, add a small amount of dish soap to address the oil component. Leave 5 minutes.

    Wash in cold or 30°C

    Machine wash in cold or at 30°C. High temperatures can set the melanoidin pigments similarly to how heat sets tannin stains. Check before tumble drying.

    For stubborn or remaining marks — oxygen bleach

    If a brown mark remains after washing on white or coloured fabric, soak in an oxygen bleach solution (OxiClean, Vanish Gold, or similar non-chlorine colour-safe bleach) for 1–6 hours. Follow product instructions. Oxygen bleach breaks down the melanoidin/tannin pigment molecules.

Dried Soy Sauce Stain

    Cold water soak for 30 minutes

    Soak the stained area in cold water for 30 minutes to rehydrate the dried soy sauce pigments. Do not use hot water.

    Apply enzyme detergent — leave 1 hour

    Apply concentrated biological detergent to the softened stain and leave for 1 hour. Dried soy sauce pigments need longer enzyme contact time.

    Wash at cold or 30°C — check before drying

    Wash at cold or 30°C. Check for remaining marks before tumble drying.

    Oxygen bleach soak for persistent marks

    Dried and set soy sauce stains often need oxygen bleach treatment. Soak in an oxygen bleach solution for 1–6 hours. Repeat if necessary. Heat-set soy sauce stains (washed hot or tumble dried) are very difficult to remove.

Teriyaki sauce

Teriyaki contains soy sauce, sugar, and mirin. The same melanoidin pigment plus caramelised sugar. Treat identically to soy sauce; enzyme detergent is essential.

Dark soy sauce / sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)

Higher sugar and molasses content creates a stickier, more concentrated stain. Slightly harder to remove than light soy sauce. Oxygen bleach usually needed on coloured fabrics.

Fish sauce

Similar fermented protein base to soy sauce but with a stronger odour component. Treat same as soy sauce — cold rinse, enzyme detergent, low-temperature wash. The odour requires thorough enzyme treatment.

Worcestershire sauce

What to Avoid

Hot water at any stage

Heat accelerates the oxidisation of melanoidins and helps them bond to fabric fibres. Hot water also sets the protein component. Cold water only throughout treatment.

Delaying treatment

Soy sauce melanoidins begin oxidising on contact with air immediately. The stain's bond to fabric fibres gets stronger every minute. Treat within minutes of the stain occurring for best results.

Tumble drying before fully removed

Dryer heat sets melanoidin/tannin pigments permanently. Always check in good light before using the dryer.

Salt on the stain as an 'absorption' treatment

The popular advice to pour salt on a wine or soy sauce stain is counterproductive for fabrics — the osmotic action of salt can drive the pigment deeper into the fabric. Rinse with cold water instead.
