How to Remove Rust Stains
Pick your fabric for a 3-step textile-chemistry guide
⏱ Treat when you canRust won't worsen significantly with time, but standard washing sets it. Use acid-based treatment.
Cotton quick fix
- 1Apply a rust remover (like Whink) or pour lemon juice on the stain and add table salt
- 2Leave for 30 minutes (try sitting it in sunlight for the lemon method)
- 3Rinse well with cold water, then wash normally and air-dry
Why Rust stains are tricky
Rust stains are iron oxide particles that bond ionically to fabric fibers and form stable iron-tannin chelate complexes, producing their characteristic orange-brown color.
How to prevent Rust stains
Store metal items away from fabric surfaces. Rust on clothing is often caused by deteriorating metal fasteners (zippers, buttons, hooks). Replace rusting hardware before it transfers. Apply a rust-removing product to metal surfaces before they contact fabric.
